The ICT Youth Challenge competition is all about growing ideas. Ideas for exciting new businesses based on Information and Communication Technology. If you've got an ICT idea, you're up to 20 years of age and live in the North East of England then they want to hear from you.

Paul Dell is a web designer, and seems to have been so for some time. He makes websites, like us. His website is www.dellwebsites.com. He doesn't sell computers and there's no chance whatsoever that we would have gone to him for a Dell computer by mistake. No chance at all.

So why are Dell Computers suing him for over 100,000 euros?

Please Dell, as customers of yours we ask you to put a stop to this - it greatly lowers you in our esteem and will certainly adversely affect the likelyhood of us buying any more computers from you.

We are a small web design company ourselves, and who says it couldn't happen to us.

This line is needed in order to assist in carrying power generated by the many new wind turbine farms being built in the Highlands, down to the Central Belt and England.

Whilst most of us wholeheartedly support an increase in renewable energy sources, the Balblair station near Beauly is already the central point for a number of powerlines. Many of these have been in place since the building of the Hydro dams in the 40s and 50s, but this means that this area of beautiful countryside has more than its fair share of pylons already.

The pylons for the new powerline will be taller and much larger than existing ones, and even more worryingly, the Government's plans for increasing renewable energy mean that after this new line there are likely to need to be two more.

Pylon Pressure is focussing on getting a Public Enquiry about these lines, with the intention of having them buried for part of their length, avoiding Beauly and district becoming the 'Pylon Capital of the Highlands'.

Run by the local CVS, its creation was assisted by Argyll and the Islands Enterprise.

The new version of the site is much faster loading and has a number of additional functions - users can request a weekly email of new jobs, can tell friends about jobs and can even earn a reward if their friend is placed.

The new structure will of course allow us much more flexibility to add more functions in the future.

The Maritime Safety Umbrella Operation is an EU project based in Viborg in Denmark.

Permission is being sought to create new power transmission lines from the Highlands down to the Central Belt. These will converge around the small town of Beauly, an area already blighted by pylons, but the new ones will be 7 times larger than those currently there.

We're assisting with the campaign to bury these power lines over some or all of their route to reduce the visual mess and reduce the potential health risks.

There is only a limited time to object to the Scottish Executive.

We'll be working on a new website over the next days and weeks.

HILFN is a project supported by HIE which has been set up to promote and provide information to local food producers, retailers and healthy living projects.

The site has news and recipe pages, a library of documents useful to growers and projects, and a collection of dynamic maps to assist in navigating the expanding database of groups in the Highlands & Islands who are involved in this sphere.

The administrator, Kristina Dupar, is making use of the system to produce an excellent example of a church website.

The success of the Cromarty site has spawned a number of others, including Invergordon, Orkney, Fortrose & Rosemarkie and lately, Inverness, all under our 'The Old Home Town' umbrella, with in total, 2500 pictures of the Highlands.

The system has gained glowing praise from visitors all over the world, with one contributor saying of the Invergordon site, "This is the best site I have found after 3 years of browsing."

Development of the site required Plexus' WebStarter system to be expanded to allow the site to be viewed AND edited in English and Japanese.

The new site is completely run by the Secretariat in Copenhagen, using our own WebStarter V3 content management software. This allows them to update and add pages, events, news stories and downloadable documents etc.

It's now being developed, and hopefully will be tested in Cromarty, starting in November. It will consist of a large computer screen in a public place, most likely the Post Office window, which will show rotating content or interest to locals and visitors in a number of frames.

Users will be able to add content, either through the website, or by texting using a mobile phone.

As of today a search on Google for Invergordon brings the site up at postion 4 - keep an eye on it over the next week or two.

The new site now runs from our WebStarter system, allowing the owners to edit all the content. As well as pages of information about the town, there is an events calendar, guestbook and business directory.

Each business featured in the directory can be given a password to keep their details up to date.

As a community website template, this system will work well for any town of similar size.

Their new website has a full list of all the plant varieties they have for sale.

We're now planning to revitalise the site on a domain of it's own. The content hasn't been updated much since we set it up, but the new site will use our WebStarter software, so we'll have no excuse for not keeping it current now.

Carefully arranged study visits and tours introduce visitors from the UK and all over the world to Scottish rural development practitioners, administrators, projects and beneficiaries.

As a former European Union Objective 1 designated area, the Highland regional experience of working with EU funding, should be of particular interest to programme and project managers from the 10 new countries who joined the EU on May 1st 2004.

Their new website show the full range of products they supply, and allows them to update the details on the site simply and easily using a WebStarter based content management system.

It also contains panoramic photos showing the office, and allows clients to submit photocopier readings through an online form.

The website Plexus have created allows the Festival management team to update the schedule of events etc using a simple online admin system.

The office has also had a lick of paint, and our network upgrade should be complete within a few days. Colin is also working on a makeover for this website which should be live shortly!

The custom-designed website uses Plexus Media's WebStarter system to allow the owners to update their site instantly whenever required.

Since going live, the client has contacted us and said "As a customer coming in with very little knowledge of website design, I was delighted with the talent that you all displayed and with the way you guided me through. Within a week of my site being submitted to the search engines, I was at the top of Google and Yahoo – a thing I didn’t believe was possible"

The website displays a large selection of Byrons Work during his life and includes a Biography and a section entitled 'My Pictures' which Byron wrote himself. It also includes contact details for anyone wishing to purchase Byrons work.

Acting with Calico we have managed to significantly reduce the hosting charges of these 'high traffic' sites whilst improving the administration and members areas.

One specific improvement for visitors to the DGSPC site is the introduction of thumbnail images in the search results - these are automatically created on the server thereby saving work for the site administrator.

Our WebStarter and Image Library systems were used to create this site which Highland Festival needed at very short notice.

The entire system can be updated by the administrator through the browser window.

Plexus agreed to create a new site for them at no cost, and has provided a powerful content management system for them so that their administrator may retain control of the day-to-day running and updating of site material. By keeping the site current this will help in emphasising fund raising efforts and encouraging donations.

The Image Library system is designed to allow access to large photographic collections, indexing the info about each in a database so that visitors can search or browse by category.

So far all the image libraries we've created are based around geographic areas, but we would be very interested to provide one to a special interest group - a library of pictures to do with canal boats was one recently mentioned. We'd be happy to provide the system free for a year to an interested party.

Hi-Wide already provides the broadband-by-radio connection which we at Plexus use.

The site also pioneers the use of Flash as a video playback device - short clips of people falling off bikes at high speed are always good for a laugh.

Plexus were contracted to create the backdrop graphics, which were supplied as movies on DVD. The night was a great success.
