Why are Dell doing this?
20 February 2006
We like Dell computers - we've bought a few of them and they work very well. We bought them online and we had no difficulty finding their website. We probably typed the address directly into our browser, or perhaps searched for Dell on Google. No problem.

Paul Dell is a web designer, and seems to have been so for some time. He makes websites, like us. His website is www.dellwebsites.com. He doesn't sell computers and there's no chance whatsoever that we would have gone to him for a Dell computer by mistake. No chance at all.

So why are Dell Computers suing him for over 100,000 euros?

Please Dell, as customers of yours we ask you to put a stop to this - it greatly lowers you in our esteem and will certainly adversely affect the likelyhood of us buying any more computers from you.

We are a small web design company ourselves, and who says it couldn't happen to us.

You can read more about this situation on a site created by a friend of Paul's. You can also donate a little cash to help him in what will be a very expensive legal battle if he decides to go ahead.

04 November 2005
Scottish and Southern Energy have lodged plans to build a new powerline from Beauly near Inverness to Denny in Stirlingshire.

This line is needed in order to assist in carrying power generated by the many new wind turbine farms being built in the Highlands, down to the Central Belt and England.

Whilst most of us wholeheartedly support an increase in renewable energy sources, the Balblair station near Beauly is already the central point for a number of powerlines. Many of these have been in place since the building of the Hydro dams in the 40s and 50s, but this means that this area of beautiful countryside has more than its fair share of pylons already.

The pylons for the new powerline will be taller and much larger than existing ones, and even more worryingly, the Government's plans for increasing renewable energy mean that after this new line there are likely to need to be two more.

Pylon Pressure is focussing on getting a Public Enquiry about these lines, with the intention of having them buried for part of their length, avoiding Beauly and district becoming the 'Pylon Capital of the Highlands'.

LLW, a specialist recruitment agency based in Inverness, are one of our oldest customers. The website we built for them back around 2001 has been very successful, but was built as a mainly static site using Adobe Go-Live and has become difficult to adapt to handle current needs.

The new version of the site is much faster loading and has a number of additional functions - users can request a weekly email of new jobs, can tell friends about jobs and can even earn a reward if their friend is placed.

The new structure will of course allow us much more flexibility to add more functions in the future.

Pylons Campaign
13 October 2005
We don't usually place news stories about sites until we've completed them, but this is an unusual case.

Permission is being sought to create new power transmission lines from the Highlands down to the Central Belt. These will converge around the small town of Beauly, an area already blighted by pylons, but the new ones will be 7 times larger than those currently there.

We're assisting with the campaign to bury these power lines over some or all of their route to reduce the visual mess and reduce the potential health risks.

There is only a limited time to object to the Scottish Executive.

We'll be working on a new website over the next days and weeks.

12 October 2005
The latest version of our MultiPlexus software has been used to set up a portal system for Community Councils in Scotland and Wales.

The system allows any Community Council to request a website with an unlimited number of pages, a document library, a calendar, a guestbook and more.

These sites can be completely free, with context advertising, or cost £70 plus VAT per annum without ads.

There is also a 'sponsored' option, which allows Community Councils to sell the advertising space on their own sites and actually make money from the process!

Our 'MultiPlexus' system allows for the creation of hundreds of content managed websites 'on the fly'. If this might be of use for your project, please contact us.

HSPC asked us to improve the search engine rankings of their Plexus built website. Within 3 months we have substantially improved the ranking with both Google and MSN on both UK-only and Worldwide searches.
We've analysed performance of their site on a huge list of search phrases we anticipate people would use to find the services HSPC offers. Combining this information with our skills and knowledge on website promotion we've made a substantial improvement of their search engine rankings within just three months!

To give you an impression of the improvements:
  • The number of top 1 and top 10 positions on relevant searches on Google and MSN worldwide have increased by over 330%
  • The number of top 1 and top 10 positions on relevant searches on Google UK-only have increased by over 300%
  • The number of top 1 positions on relevant searches on MSN UK-only have increased by nearly 700%

As well as being in the top 3 for most property related searches involving the word 'Highland', HSPC is now in the top 10 in Google for 'property for sale scotland' - it was 112th in June.

In the rapidly disintegrating situation in Zimbabwe, wildlife conservation projects are finding their task increasingly difficult. One of Robert Mugabe's allies, Obert Mpofu, has recently 'seized' the world-renowned Hwange Wildlife Estate to be used for his own private hunting purposes.
Home to about 500 'presidential' elephants, it is feared that the land will become a free-for-all for poachers and Obert Mpofu's friends. Fears are also growing that the Hwange National Park may also be 'seized' for the same purposes. It is estimated that poaching has already cost Zimbabwe more than $400-million in lost tourism revenue.
In the unstable Zimbabwean political climate, and the accelerating collapse of farming, commercial poaching and the trapping of wild animals by starving villagers is decimating Zimbabwe's wildlife.
The African Wild Dog, already on the brink of extinction, is one of the most vulnerable species, and Plexus were delighted to hear from Tusk Trust that Colin's Save the African Wild Dog site is helping their efforts.
"We had Peter Blinston who runs our Wild Dog project in Zimbabwe over the other day who was singing your praises regarding your web site. Apparently its been quite a talking point in the 'Dog' world."

The Scottish Highlands Explorer website at www.cali.co.uk/highexp was just about the first site we at Plexus ever set up (1996). That was in the days when a domain cost about the same as a house, so we hosted it on Calico's. It became very well known over the years, especially for Colin's maps, many of which still have the name of Colin's old company on them (and many of which appear - often without permission - on a multitude of other websites.)

We're now planning to revitalise the site on a domain of it's own. The content hasn't been updated much since we set it up, but the new site will use our WebStarter software, so we'll have no excuse for not keeping it current now.

As a result of Colin's designing a site to aid fundraising for the conservation of the African Wild Dog, Plexus were contacted by the Tusk Trust. Tusk is a charity which suppports many conservation projects across Africa, and they were very keen to have a major redesign and redevelopment of their site.

Plexus agreed to create a new site for them at no cost, and has provided a powerful content management system for them so that their administrator may retain control of the day-to-day running and updating of site material. By keeping the site current this will help in emphasising fund raising efforts and encouraging donations.

Cromarty Image Library goes 500+Cromarty Image Library goes 500+
17 November 2003
The first implementation of Plexus's Image Library software now has more than 500 pictures and almost 300 visitor comments.

The Image Library system is designed to allow access to large photographic collections, indexing the info about each in a database so that visitors can search or browse by category.

So far all the image libraries we've created are based around geographic areas, but we would be very interested to provide one to a special interest group - a library of pictures to do with canal boats was one recently mentioned. We'd be happy to provide the system free for a year to an interested party.
